Garden Funding

The Spring Gardens community garden is a volunteer operated and managed, community-based 501(c)(3) non-profit. The garden’s funding sources include affordable annual dues from members; donations from our members, community, and sponsors; grants from sponsors; and extensive volunteer work.

The Spring Gardens has been funded in two primary ways:

  • Annual dues of member gardeners – The Spring Gardens deliberately limits dues, which vary according to plot size, to cover only costs such as maintenance and watering.
  • Contributions – The garden’s chief supporter has been the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society with substantial cash grants and in-kind support.  The City of Philadelphia provided significant start-up services with local District City Councilman Darrell Green giving valuable support.  Private donations have come from individual members, neighbors, and local businesses and groups, including virtually all of the local restaurants.

In addition, extensive volunteer work by gardeners has permitted keeping operating costs low.  However, the garden now faces serious capital and maintenance costs that will require significant funding.

The Spring Gardens welcomes donations, grants, and volunteer contributions. Please contact or donate online or via mail.
